Why should our family attend a Cathedral Grammar Open Day?

Choosing the right school is about more than what you can learn from a website or prospectus. Open Day gives you the opportunity to experience Cathedral Grammar firsthand — to step inside our classrooms, meet our students and teachers, see learning in action and experience the character and culture of our School.

From Pre-School through to Year 8, you will discover an environment where each child is known, challenged and supported, and where strong foundations in learning sit alongside exceptional opportunities in music, sport, the arts, leadership and service. Most importantly, Open Day gives you the opportunity to imagine your child here.

What can we expect to see and do during Open Day?

Open Day is an opportunity to see Cathedral Grammar as it really is. You will explore our classrooms and specialist learning spaces, see students and teachers in action, and discover the breadth of learning and opportunities available across the School.

You will also have the opportunity to meet our Principal, members of our leadership team and teaching staff, ask questions and learn more about your child's particular stage of education — whether you are considering Pre-School, the Junior School or our Preparatory School through to Years 7 and 8.

Will we be able to see the School while students are learning?

Yes. We believe one of the best ways to understand Cathedral Grammar is to see our School in action. During your visit, you will have the opportunity to experience the atmosphere of our classrooms, observe learning taking place and see the relationships between our students and teachers.

It provides an authentic glimpse into an ordinary day at Cathedral Grammar — not simply what our School looks like, but what it feels like to be part of it.

Should we bring our child to Open Day?

Absolutely. We warmly encourage prospective students to attend with their parents and caregivers. Open Day is as much an opportunity for your child to experience Cathedral Grammar as it is for you.

They can explore the School, see students of their own age learning, meet teachers and begin to picture what their own day at Cathedral Grammar might look like. We know that choosing a school is an important decision for the whole family, and we want children to feel part of that experience.

What makes Cathedral Grammar different?

Cathedral Grammar offers a distinctive education for children from Pre-School through to Year 8, combining strong academic foundations with specialist teaching and rich opportunities beyond the classroom.

Our central Christchurch location and unique relationship with ChristChurch Cathedral are part of a heritage stretching back more than 140 years, while our approach to learning continues to evolve for the world our students are growing into. It is an education grounded in tradition, strengthened by community and focused firmly on preparing children for what comes next.

Is Open Day only for families looking to enrol next year?

Not at all. We welcome families at every stage of their decision-making, whether you are considering Cathedral Grammar for the coming year or beginning to explore schooling options several years ahead.

Visiting early can be particularly helpful in understanding the different entry points across the School and planning your child's educational pathway. Our Enrolments team will be available to talk with you about your individual circumstances and answer any questions about future entry.

What if we can't attend Open Day?

If you are unable to join us for Open Day, we would still love to welcome you to Cathedral Grammar. Families can arrange a personal tour of the School, giving you the opportunity to explore our learning environments, see the School in action and discuss your child's individual needs and enrolment pathway with our Director of Enrolments: oramn@cathedralgrammar.school.nz
