ChristChurch Cathedral
The story of The Cathedral Grammar School begins with ChristChurch Cathedral.
Founded in 1881, the school was established as the Cathedral's Choir School, with the original purpose of educating the Cathedral's boy choristers while preparing them for further education. Following the great English cathedral tradition, the school and Cathedral Choir were founded together, creating a partnership that has endured for more than 140 years.
Today, that relationship remains at the heart of our school's identity. Students gather in the Cathedral for services and significant celebrations throughout the year, while our choristers continue a proud musical tradition that has been part of Christchurch since 1881. Now including both boy and girl choristers, this partnership provides exceptional opportunities for students to develop their musical talents while contributing to one of New Zealand's most distinguished choral traditions.
More than our historical origins, our connection with ChristChurch Cathedral shapes our Anglican character, our values, and our sense of community. It is a living partnership that continues to enrich the educational experience of every Cathedral Grammar student
