At The Cathedral Grammar Pre-School, our tamariki are involved in all aspects of day to day life within our wider school. Being part of our unique school community, provides opportunities to weave the five strands of Te Whāriki through real experiences with people, places and objects in our environment.
It was wonderful to see our Pre-School tamariki welcome our new Deputy Principal, Mr Ryan Shaughnessy, with an informal mihi whakatau.
The welcome commenced with a karakia led by Head of Pre-School, Mrs Rachel Allan, followed by a waiata, which was sung with such strength and passion.
The Pre-School Korowai cloak was placed on Mr Shaughnessy as a mantle of prestige and honour to reflect rangatiratanga in his role as Deputy Principal. The Korowai cloak is also a symbol of leadership, and infers the obligation to care for the people and environment.
Special thanks to kaikao Miss Emma for reading the tamariki's chosen whakatauki, and to Mr Thelning for his greeting and showing us hongi.
Mr Shaugnessy and his family were welcomed as manuhiri (visitors) and through our welcome are now tangata whenua of The Cathedral Grammar School.
Chaplain Teresa, Dean Lawrence and Mr Thelning will formally welcome Mr Shaughnessy and Mrs du Toit at our full school chapel service, with all students and faculty in attendance on Monday, 26 July.
