At The Cathedral Grammar School, we celebrate and embrace cultural diversity in the classroom. This involves celebrating differences and creating a culture of inclusion and acceptance among students and the greater school community.
Chinese New Year is the most important festival in the Chinese calendar and is often referred to as the Spring Festival. A major holiday in many Asian cultures, Chinese New Year’s Day to welcome in the Year of the Ox falls on 12 February 2021.
Recently, The Pre-School celebrated Chinese New Year with a traditional waist drum dance from the Christchurch Zhonghua Chinese Society, performing their special song Happy New Year - Xinnian Hao Ya, and sharing an array of traditional Chinese foods.
The children were also visited by a special guest dressed as a Panda, who presented gifts to each of the children. The Chinese regard the Panda as a symbol for friendship and peace, although there were some children who regarded this particular Panda as unusual - there may have been a sneak peek of the real face under the mask for those children requiring reassurance!
A wonderful morning, thank you to Mrs Carina Li and family, Christchurch Zhonghua Chinese Society, Mr Thelning (Panda) and the Pre-School staff.
祝您新年快乐,身体健康 - Happy New Year!
